Nicholas Isaiah's Birth Story

Nicholas Isaiah is here!

On Saturday March 26th I started feeling like maybe it was getting closer to baby time. The contractions that I had been having were mild compared to the ones that I started experiencing that night. Unlike the past several months, these contractions only hurt in my lower abdomen, not my entire belly, they felt like a menstraul cramp multiplied by 100. I had also starting having some back pain, so I took a bath hoping that would help. After my bath I went to bed, it was really hard to get comfortable, & I was up about 10 times to go to the bathroom.

When I woke up Sunday morning the pain was still there, but the contractions weren't doing anything "regular", 5-20 min apart. Around 1 pm, I went & told Robert that I thought this might be it, but I wouldn't bank on it. Just kind of felt like something could happen. Within 30 min of saying something to Robert, they stopped. About 3:30 p I felt a little froggy, so I went up to proposition hubby into a little "fun", not that it has worked in the past, but thought I'd give it a try this time. Afterwards the contractions hurt a little more, but still weren't regular, if anything they spaced out. At 7:45 pm I felt like I needed to go to the bathroom, before I could get up I felt a pop. Didn't think it was my water breaking because like my previous pregnancies, I didn't have a gush following the pop. So I went upstairs to use the bathroom, and noticed that I was actually leaking fluid!!! YAY it's baby time FINALLY!! I told Robert my water had broken, called my mom & then the dr. It would take my mom and hr & 30 min to get here, so our nephew Chris took the older kids to his hockey game, and we ended up taking the 3 younger ones with us to the hospital.

I think we arrived at the hospital around 8:45 or 9 pm (hard getting that many kids ready lol). I got into my room, got everything hooked up & started the wait. The boys did great, they played around the room & just watched mommy to see what was going on. I got checked & was about 3-4 cm so not much progress from my appt on Mon. The first thing the dr starts talking about is using pitocin to bring on the contractions. She said that since my water had broken, it was best cause it was dangerous to be in labor for a long time. Well I'm not on my first child hun & I've been in labor for 8 hrs before with my water broken & my child has been just fine. So I tell her that I don't want the pitocin, and that's it. So at about 10:30 pm she comes in & checks me. I was 5 cm still only 80% effaced & -2 station. The boys were getting sleepy, so I had my mom take them home, think that was around 11, although I wouldn't have minded the boys being there, I think it was better that they went home.

At 12 am on the 28th, Robert & I decided (against my better judgement) to do the pitocin. At 12:10 am we started the pitocin to get labor going. Around 12:40 I noticed that the contractions were hurting more & more, and that the medicine (fetinol) was working less & less. So I asked about getting some more. She tells me to wait another 20 min, and she'd give me more. She checked me at 12:50, and I was 7 cm & 100% effaced. Five mins later I noticed that I was having a lot of pressure for only being 7 cm & that I had that urge to push, so I had her check me again, and sure enough I was already 10 cm. She calls for the dr & the nurses, all the while she keeps her hand in there cause he was on his way out without me pushing. She kept trying to get me to focus on her, and my breathing, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't stop him from coming out. I guess he figured he'd been in there long enough, he was done.

At 1:01 am Nicholas Isaiah was born. He wasn't breathing when he was born, so they had to work to get him breathing. After a few mins we heard him cry, that was the best sound I'd ever heard. During labor his heartbeat was decreasing due to the pitocin, (which is why I would never use it again), they even talked about doing a c-section if he didn't come out soon. He weighed in at 8 lb 13 oz (12.8 oz but nurses said to call it 13), and he was 20 3/4 in long. He was my heaviest baby, and right in the middle of the other boys for height. They checked his blood sugar & it was 40. The dr's said they would like to see it somewhere between 45 & 100. So the nurse took tube of blood & sent it to the lab for accurate testing. In the meantime the nurse gave him 20 ml of formula to get his levels up a little. When the lab result came back it was 19, so he was given another 20 ml of formula. We waited 3 hrs & checked it again, it was 58. He ended up getting poked about 4 or 5 times to make sure his levels stayed up. By the 24 hrs old his levels were good, so no more sticking.

All in all it was worth it. He is such a good baby, even let's mommy sleep at night. I'm not quite sure yet who he looks like, I see Braeden's eyes & Zackary's mouth :) He's got long skinny fingers & toes, the toes I'm sure are Daddy's, he's got Monkey toes LOL Think that's about it, thanks for reading my novel.
